From regional roots to international fame
From international basketball courts to the world's biggest concert stages, the Wimmera Mallee has produced people whose careers have attracted national attention.

Google Trends data reveals Australian search interest in musician Nick Cave, media personality Peta Credlin and basketballer Chloe Bibby have varied considerably during the past five years.
Warracknabeal-born Cave recorded the highest average relative search interest among the three, with significant peaks coinciding with major developments in his musical career.
Credlin, who grew up in Wycheproof, also recorded fluctuations in national search interest, while searches for Warracknabeal-raised basketballer Bibby were too low to establish a reliable pattern in the comparison.

Searches for “Chloe Bibby” were seen around early 2023, and again trending for a period in 2025 and 2026.
Bibby is a professional basketball player who was born in Horsham and grew up on a farm near Warracknabeal.
She has played US College basketball, first for Mississippi State University (2017–2020) and later the University of Maryland (2020–2022), averaging 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds across 150 games.
In her freshman year, Bibby and the Bulldogs made it to the National Championship, losing to Notre Dame 61-58.
Since graduating, Bibby has played for Australia, winning gold at the FIBA Oceania Under-18 Championships and later at the Asia Cup in 2025.
She has played for several WNBA teams, Golden State Valkyries, Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx, and most recently, has joined a Spanish basketball side, Valencia Basket, in Spain’s national women’s basketball league on a temporary contract.
Singer, musician, and writer Nick Cave, frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, was born in Warracknabeal.
Searches for “Nick Cave” surged in May 2022, when he experienced a family tragedy alongside the release of a new documentary.
In November 2022, Nick Cave was again trending when the Australian leg of his Carnage Tour launched.
Searches for the frontman surged in August 2024 with the release of his band’s 18th studio album, Wild God.
In January this year, searches for Nick Cave peaked when the band brought The Wild God Tour to Australia, marking the band's first Australian and New Zealand shows since 2017.
Peta Credlin AO was born and raised in Wycheproof, and maintains strong ties with her hometown, highlighting regional issues through her work as a weekly columnist with News Corp Australia’s The Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Herald Sun.
Before becoming Tony Abbott's chief of staff, Credlin worked as a political adviser to several Coalition ministers across a 16 year career.
Since 2017, she has hosted her successful prime-time program Credlin on Sky New Australia, now News24 Australia.
Over the past five years, searches for “Peta Credlin” increased in November 2022, and again in August 2023 for her response to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
Despite the differences in measurable search interest, all three have established careers beyond their regional beginnings.
