Daylight saving should be put to the vote — that’s according to the Deputy Leader of the National Party of Victoria, Mr Milton Whiting, MLA for Mildura.

The National Party of Victoria called for a referendum to be held on daylight saving in conjunction with the State elections this month.

However, the request, made last October, was refused because the Premier, Mr Hamer, believes that an opinion poll conducted three years ago found that 70 percent of Victorians favor daylight saving and this poll was a valid indication of public feeling on the matter.

“My strongest objection is that the electors of Victoria have not been given a chance to vote on the issue,” Mr Whiting said.

“I understand that NSW is to conduct a referendum at its State elections this year,” Mr Whiting said.

“I suspect the poll Mr Hamer quotes was merely one conducted by telephone by a Melbourne newspaper,” Mr Whiting claims.

He said that in West Australia a referendum on daylight saving saw a result of two to one against its introduction.
