The sides traded the lead in the opening quarter before a couple of goals late by Ayva Mitchell and Jemma Clarkson gave the Warriors a 13-11 margin.

Despite missing eight shots in the following quarter, the hosts were able to extend their lead before half-time, going into the break ahead 26-23.

Stawell took the opportunity after half-time for player rotation, as Mitchell shot 10 of Stawell’s next 11 goals.

The Eagles' trio of Briodi McKenzie, Isabella Orszulak and Nicola Clyne clawed back the margin as their side hit the lead during quarter three, but the Warriors regained the advantage just minutes before the final interval to go into the break 37-35.

Mitchell scored 13 goals in the last quarter to give the hosts a 53-45 win.

She scored 47 goals (77 per cent), while Clarkson and Madi Taylor added three each.

Clyne top scored for the Eagles with 26 goals (90pc), supported by McKenzie’s 13 (68pc) and Orszulak’s six (75pc).

Eagles coach Sarah Spicer said the game could have gone either way heading into the final term.

"In the last quarter we just wasted a few opportunities – bad decisions on passing etc – and maybe didn't handle the pressure as well," Spicer said.

"It was a really good game."

Spicer admitted the Warriors had a great target in Mitchell as goal shooter and said despite the Eagles’ defence playing well at times they were unable to curb her influence on the result.

But the coach said she was also impressed with her own goal shooter, despite the side falling short of the win.

"Nicola Clyne had a solid game at GS," Spicer said.

"She had a good shooting percentage and moved well.

"Jordan Heller had a tough gig playing at GK but she was able to give us numerous opportunities and turn the ball over in our favour."
